Democracy in Action: SLO Branch Members Staff the Polls on June 2
When California voters headed to the polls on June 2 for the 2026 statewide primary election, AAUW's San Luis Obispo branch was right there to make it happen. Our members proudly participated in the San Luis Obispo County Elections Office's Adopt-a-Poll program, staffing a local polling location from before the doors opened until the last ballot was cast.
The Adopt-a-Poll (AAP) program serves three important functions: it improves service to voters by increasing the number of committed precinct workers on Election Day; it helps maintain the integrity of the elections process through training and support; and it offers local organizations the opportunity to raise funds while providing a vital service to their community. For our branch, it's also a natural extension of AAUW's century-long commitment to civic participation and voting rights.
The SLO County Elections Office has one of the most robust Adopt-a-Poll programs in the state, and we are proud to be part of it.
A Big Election Day
The June 2 primary had California voters choose candidates for governor, all U.S. House seats, state Assembly seats, even-numbered state Senate seats, and a range of other statewide offices.
Our volunteers helped ensure that every voter who walked through the door of our precinct could exercise that right smoothly and confidently.
Our Branch in Action
Our team arrived at 6:00 am and spent Election Day guiding voters through the process — checking registrations, explaining the ballot, and keeping the precinct running on time. We had a total of 17 members, spouses and partners working throughout the day. Funds raised through our participation go directly to support AAUW SLO's programs and scholarships.
It can be a long day, but so many of the voters take the time to thank us for staffing the poll.
